Edessa, our city.

The history of Edessa, one of the most significant in ancient Greece, has been alive from the foundation of the town until now. Being naturally wealthy and built on the Rock, because of its strategic position attracted many conquerors. However, despite the periods of conquest, with bigger one that of Ottoman domination, Edessa kept its national identity and its incomparable natural beauty.

Today, Edessa is included in the most beautiful cities of Greece. Its waterfalls, the historical center, with the colors of the old Greece, its archaeological sites, the Dormition of Virgin Mary (church of 14th century), the relics which are kept in old-Christian and Byzantine temples in the region underneath Edessa that is called Longos (Scrub), the Geni Tzami (the only Turkish mosque that is maintained inalterable), the Kannabourgeio (a factory which manufactured ropes using as raw material the cannabis) are some poles of attraction for the tourists that visit our city each day.

Despite its postwar dense layout, Edessa remains very beautiful and impressive. Its Waterfalls, its numerous channels that cross the city, the small bridges which help in communication, the famous parks (Kioupri, Waterfall’s park, Great Alexander’s park, 25th March park), the full of trees streets, are some elements that render Edessa a unique place.

Modern Edessa, capital of the prefecture of Pella - Great Alexander’s homeland – has to deal with a big challenge. The challenge of search and claim of its role that should have in United Europe, in Greece, in Macedonia. Having participations in common actions like the National network of cities with river, the World organism of cities having cultural heritage and the European network of cities that save energy (Energy Cities), our city tries day by day, year by year, for its development assisted by its workforce, citizens and municipal authorities, that comprise the best possible guarantee for its future.
